Fifth Leg Shiraz Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Western Australia, Australia Community Score82/100Community Reviews 7 Add My Review Price $ Drink 2011-2014 Bottle size 750 ml Natalie's Score 88/100A savoury, meaty, juicy red that's bursting with black plums and berries. There's a little mint on the nose which gives the wine a pleasant lift. Darkly concentrated, this is a terrific party wine. Start a party just by opening it. We immediately consulted our smart phones to make sure fifth leg wasn't in the urban dictionary. Apparently the fifth leg refers to the mysterious fossilized remains of a Tasmanian tiger with five legs found in a secret cave on the winery's estate. When our wine arrived the mystery was solved this is a seriously smooth red with lots of legs. Danielle rated this wine as 52/100 with the following reviewIf someone else poured that in a glass for me, I would drink it and say it was delicious but I wouldn't think it. It had too much of a kick to it. Shiraz fruit greets the front palate while Merlot plays a traditional role filling out the mid-palate. Cabernet finishes with fine and gentle tannins to create length on the finish. Soft and smooth, there are juicy dark berry fruits with spicy, balanced oak. It's lifted and full of berries - raspberries, blueberries, cherries and spice. Further complexity comes from spicy French oak. The palate shows soft and lush flavours with persistent red and blueberry characters supported by a fine tannin structure. The finish displays lovely length and a harmonious fruit and oak balance. Technical The Fifth Leg Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is a serious wine in a fun package. Shiraz provides the backbone to this wine with plenty of plum, pepper and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon delivers dark cherry and blackberry fruit, with nice grippy tannins, while Merlot fills out the mid-palate with plenty of juicy, fleshy red fruits. Serious vineyard development began only in the late 1960’s following the publication of a report by John Gladstones in 1965 stating that the area had a similar climate to Pomerol or St Emilion, with low frost risk, plenty of sunshine and equable temperatures within the growing season promoting even ripening. Margaret River’s climate is warm and maritime, with some cooling influence provided by southeast trade winds. The soils derive from granitic and a gneissic rock over which laterite has formed. The region can be divided in three sub-regions the cooler south between Yallingup and Karridale with predominantly lateritic gravelly loamy sands and sandy loams; the warm and sunnier Willyabrup in the centre with predominantly gravelly loams, but some gritty sandy loams and granitic gravels; and Margaret River in the north with similar soils, but slightly cooler tem Margaret River Located three hours south of Perth, Margaret River is Western Australia’s most prestigious wine-growing region. This is entirely consistent with style; the wines from Willyabrup being more generous than the highly structured wines of the north and the elegant styles of the south. Margaret River is best known for high quality Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends and top notch Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends. Over the years, the region has established an astonishing reputation illustrating a consistency in quality and a strongly focused winemaking culture. view more / less Winery DEVIL'S LAIR WINES Langton’s Selections Devil’s Lair Chardonnay, Devil’s Lair Cabernet Sauvignon Phil Sexton established Devil’s Lair in 1985, with his first vineyard plantings in 1981. The two year and older barrels are used for Devil’s Lair’s Fifth Leg brand. The Chardonnay is classically made with 30% of the handpicked fruit whole-bunch pressed. The juice is cold settled before barrel fermentation in new French oak. Regular battonage, extended lees contact and 11 months maturation in new oak completes the picture. Devil’s Lair is a member of the Fosters Group stable. The Chardonnay is brilliantly focused, with all the signs of cellaring potential and represents great value at this level of quality. The Cabernet Sauvignon, which comprises a proportion of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is emerging as a definitive southern Margaret River style with pure cassis, black chocolate aromas, and touches of mint and long sinewy tannins.
